I found this article quite interesting. Being that my focus is on drawing and ceramics, and not the technical graphic designer focus, I had never given much thought to typeface. I had never thought past the mere presence of a typeface and how it is in relation to mechanics of the paper and its overall intent for the reader.
My favorite part of the article was when author Postrel connected the typeface busy world to the world of sculpture and paintings by how both artists in these respected fields strive to create something new and exciting out of what is already out there. Trying to retain the alphabet while giving a new “breath” or “life” to the world of either typeface or sculpture.
What I also found interesting was how detailed and concise typeface makers are when approaching type. Is it too long? Is the type too curved? The artists behind typeface must not only take into account the type itself but what paper and visual message the thing that holds the typeface is trying to convey.
After reading this article, I would hope to explore and possibly create a typeface within the Digital Media class and get the chance to learn and indulge in the process of typeface.
